Evaluation

Looking back at this project, overall i have really enjoyed developing my characters and creating mine and my partners design. I have really liked exploring an era that i knew nothing about before, so learning new information about the 1920's weimer berlin has been interesting and has broadened my knowledge in general not just specifically in make up and hair. It has tested my skills, practically and theoretically but i feel i have learned a lot and am more confident in both areas than i was before. I have liked that there were several sources of research and things to refer to such as a film, script and book.
I have definitely found aspects of it challenging this term, in regards to it being quite quick paced to  have our designs ready and research and background work done. Especially as it is a period that i have started from scratch and had never read the book before. After researching though i felt my design ideas flowed and along with help from both practical classes in coming up with an historical design for the character i chose, Sally Bowles. I was pleased with the outcome of my design that my partner created, she listened well to my direction and it came out how imagined it too. If i could go back or modify my design, i would spray the green in my hair brown as it showed up too much and gave it a more contemporary edge.
I felt like my timed assessment, creating my partners design reached my partners expectations. She seem pleased with the final outcome. I had never created kiss curls before so i struggled with them in practices we had done, but i kept practicing and they turned out well on the day. My time management was good and i felt i followed her step by steps to the best of my ability.
I really enjoyed the second half contemporary club culture part of the project. I liked how open it was and looking back now or if i had a chance to develop my contemporary look i would definitely go for more of an extravagant look. I enjoyed researching and looking for inspiration as i found it more me than the first half. I was pleased with my design but feel i didn't showcase my full ability, creatively.
Overall i feel like both my designs have turned out well and reflect my research, even though i would change a few things if i was to develop them again. I throughly enjoyed learning about a new time period, in general and in regards to make up and hair. I have learnt new skills, such us finger waving, creating a bob, kiss curls which will help me in the future and for other designs. I am more confident in my practical and theoretical skills and feel my final outcomes demonstrate this.

Contemporary final design.

Overall i was pleased with outcome of my contemporary design, if i was to develop or progress this look again, i would definitely go more extreme with the make up, and build different textures onto the face using different products and accessories, as i feel i could have gone a lot more avant grade. But i do like my design and the way it came out.

Kit Kat girl designs

I made this face chart using the colour still that were used in the 1930's but a lot bolder and stonger.

After testing out this design, i really didn't like it, i wanted it to be done in aqua colour so it was bolder, but i felt the shape and colour made it look more like face paint at a kids party, and it looked quite butterfly like.

After testing out my designs, i choose to use this one as i felt like it was the most how i see club culture and would suit my character best. I also feel it would suit my hair style better as i feel my hair also gives off a slight punky vibe. I have chosen to use the blue eye shadow colour as this is my contemporary 1920's look i have taken inspiration from the colours used historically within the era, contrasting this to the bright purple lip moves the design into a contemporary setting and conveys my club culture influence from my previous research particularly when watching Party Monsters were the lip colours stood out to me.

I further feel colour symbolism in my design is key i decided to use purple on the lips because the colour symbolism as purple symbolises change and that something is going to happen i feel this relates to both cabaret and club kids as the era was short the people of both Weimar Berlin and club culture live for the moment and this colour symbolises this element knowing change will happen but living for now. I further found this image of the theatre production cabaret featuring allan cummings it explores this idea as the lighting to me is reminiscent of club lighting and inspired the colour within my final design.

Also the placement of the eyeshadow is because at 20's eye they would use a darker colour into the crease of the eye, so thats why i choose that placement for this design.

I want the hair to have a finger wave at the front, then into two buns either side, to give it a more contemporary feel. I also want to add different colour chalks through out the hair. I will also leave the hair in a middle parting instead of a side parting like they did in the 1920's.

Kit Kat

I have chosen to do a kit kat girl for my contemporary character from act one scene four when they are perfuming on stage with Sally on New years eve. The club girls are girls that perform at the kit kat club. They are all dressed up, like Sally. All the women are all different shapes and sizes. I think they look quite androngenous, some of them aren't even attractive.
Its new years eve at the club, so it obviously winter. This wouldn't have any effect on what they were wearing though, they would have their normal costumes on as they would be performing. The kit kat girls just want to put on a good show and get a good reaction from the crowd and do their job. Where its new years eve i expect the atmosphere was a lot higher than just a normal night. So i feel like the girls would have more energy that usual.
The active verb i would use for this is 'to entice' so i would use a striking eye to catch someones attention or a bold lip. Or even both as this section is contemporary club culture.

Contemp inspiration.

Lady gaga i feel portrays things that the club kids did, via fashion. Everything she wears is over the top, along with head wear, her hair, and make up. I feel like some of her stuff is a lot more contemporary though, but still has the extreme avant garde feel.
Some inspirational images:

I also love this image, where lady gaga is using coke can in her hair as an accessory which is something that bowery and club kids did so this has come from there and is even inspiring celebrities today.

Leigh Bowery

Bowery was a famous performance artist, actor, fashion designer amongst other thing in London. He was thought to have been one of the most influential in the 1980's-1990's in the art/fashion circle with all his avant grade ideas, influencing fashion designers and performers even today.
He had a post modern take on drag and was the main inspiration for the traminal drag movement.
His outrageous costumes and shoots have a real club kid feel.

I really love this image of him, i like the way the eyes have a high green eye shadow. I also like the that they look like they are lined with eye liner. I want to now come up with some face charts inspired from this, but with a more modern contemporary feel.

Contempory collages.

Today seema asked us to draw/add things to our historical images to try and get inspiration for creating our contemporary characters.

My first was this finger wave exageratted and the hair down adding colour.
The second was adding a fringe and some short hair.
And the third would adding objects into the hair like coke cans/rubbish. etc.

Club culture/ the club kids.

Club kids were youths from new york city that lives centre around clubs, raves and drugs. They were known for their outrageous dress up and costumes and extreme drug use. In the late 1980's-1990's, the two leaders were James St James and Micheal Alig. They held illegal parties and appeared on tv shows, they attracted people and attention everywhere they went in the height of the cultures popularity.

The film party monster was made which is a true story taken from the book James St James wrote about their lives.

Bobs and curloing for 1930's hair.

·      Set up table, tongs on and use towel.
·      Set up produtcs. (dry shampoo, heat spray, hairspray.) Vita Point* Brushes and pins.
·      The waved bob, some other products that might be handy (hood dryer, mason and peason, hot sticks, ready made chinouns and buns, hair nets.
·      Section hair, sides from ear to ear and back of the hair.
·      Section from the front and curls. If clients hair is really long, don’t worry about curling all the way down, but make sure to do it like brickwork.
·      Direction of the hair changes direction.
·      Once curled, brush out and create finger wave with the front.

·      Tuck up the back of the hair and place curls over and grip in place to create a bob.

Final images and evaluation.

Here are the final images for my Historical Sally Bowles.

I was really happy with the outcome and how my partner created my design. She listened to the direction i gave her in the practice that we did and followed the step by steps i made, exactly. Her time management throughout the whole assessment was great and she had time to do everything to her full ability and wasn't rushing. I was extremely happy with the eyebrows as we have not been taught it, they came out really well, i know this was something Millie was concerned about but i feel she did a good job. Millie's work station throughout the assessment got a bit un tidy, so i feel that is an area that she could improve on. However in terms of practical skills and creating my design i feel Millie did a really good job and is able to take direction. If i could change anything, it would be to spray the green in my hair brown as i feel this takes away from it being historical. Overall, i was pleased with my design.

Group Discussion.

We were asked in groups to discuss questions from the seminar with Seema.

  1. What Characteristics define character?

We choose Sally Bowles, as group we talked about and said that her character is defined by two things, her appearance and her personality. Her personality is very out there, she doesn't think before she speaks, and is doesn't care what people think about her.  We also spoke about her appearance and said that she expresses herself through that because she has quite dramatic eye make up, even when she isn't on stage. And the colour of her nails, as they were green. Her style in general is a little over the top.

2. According to your research so far do you feel that the character designs are appropriate?

We said yes, because the image of sally, is everything you imagine whilst reading it. Her looks for when she is at work are much more dramatic than for when she is at home. Sally always wears black with another colour, so it changes her character when she wears white.

3. What techniques are used to create hair and make up?

For the hair we thought that it would probably have been wigs for the characters as it would be better for continuity.

Anita Berber. Continuity.

I decided to keep my design simple, for Anita Berber, because of the short amount of time we have to do it in. Ive gone for a dark smokey eye, with a red lip as i feel thats what she would be wearing. My anita would be in the day time, not at night, which is why i choose them colours.
The hair i want to be curls, but i want them to be quite messy (as if she had be out the day before) and then i want it to be gipped both sides.

Week one:

Week 2:

I think continuity wise they are quite similar, the partings are slightly diffdrent  and the curls are more brushed out in the first. However I feel like I did my design wrong as I don’t feel that they look very much like Anita Berber. I wish I had chosen to use a green or blue on the eyes, and done everything a lot more bolder and heavier. I did however want to block out the eyebrow but I didn’t know how to do this at this point.
